Island of the Apprentices is a ritualistic performance series inspired by an island in South Greenland. This site was in older Greenlandic history used by apprentices, who wished to become an angakkoq - shaman.

An apprentice went to the island in isolation for a period of time. Through different ritual work the apprentice would eventually form a relation with spirit helpers from the invisible world. The spirit helpers would help the apprentice to work as an angakkoq throughout life.

One of the rituals is the well known monotonous scraping of two stones aginst each other.
